Kai Sovereignty: Growing Together for a Stronger Whānau
Service Description
Kai Sovereignty: Growing Together for a Stronger Whānau At Whare Manaaki, we’re passionate about empowering whānau Māori to take control of their kai journey, embracing food sovereignty for healthier, more self-reliant communities. Growing and eating food we nurture ourselves not only means knowing exactly what’s in it, but it also deepens our connection to the whenua and saves on the grocery bill! From planting the first seed to harvesting the fruits of your labour, we’re here to guide you every step of the way. Our hands-on community education covers: Composting: Turn your waste into nourishment for your soil. Seed Propagation & Collecting: Learn how to grow from scratch and save seeds for future harvests. Planting Techniques: Discover the best ways to ensure your garden thrives. Minimising Waste: Reduce, reuse, and repurpose for sustainable living. Whether you’re new to gardening or looking to deepen your skills, we’ll help you build the knowledge and confidence to grow kai with pride and purpose. Together, let’s plant the seeds for a healthier tomorrow. Pātaka Kai - Community Food Pantry At Whare Manaaki, the pātaka is a living expression of manaakitanga. Every week, around 100 whānau access the Pātaka located out front on Tainui Street, grab the basics, and, just as importantly, be seen and welcomed without judgement. This work is made possible first and foremost by the Food Network, whose steady support keeps our pātaka stocked with the essentials that help whānau breathe a little easier. Z Energy has also provided much needed support to ensure we have the welcoming smile of our kaimanaaki to stock the Pātaka and manage the distribution of kai to other services and Community groups when required. Their generosity has sparked a ripple effect across our community. Local people and groups now use the pātaka as a place to share their own abundance — trays of eggs, spare milk, still-fresh bread — the everyday gifts that make a real difference. If you or your group would like to contribute, we welcome non-perishable items and fresh produce when available to be placed directly in the Pātaka. And if times are tight at your place, please know you’re always welcome here. The pātaka exists for you — and because of you. Ngā mihi nui to the Food Network, Z Energy and to every hand that gives, receives, and keeps the pātaka thriving.
